Celebrating Women Filmmakers

In her deeply moving final essay film, which premiered just months before her tragic death, legendary director and feminist icon Chantal Akerman (Jeanne Dielman) captures her relationship with and the routines of her beloved aged mother, Natalia. Natalia, as we learn, was a Holocaust survivor who married and raised a family in Brussels. For Chantal, Natalia remains the most important person in her world—something we see even in their video chats, with one occurring while the filmmaker was travelling in Oklahoma. Natalia has also served, over the course of a lifetime, as the primary subject of her daughter’s work, for a cinema that poetically blends the personal and political as few others have. No Home Movie is one of the year’s most essential cinematic events.
