Francofonia tells the story of a pair of former enemies, Louvre director Jacques Jaujard and Nazi Officer Count Franziskus Wolff-Metternich, who have been brought together during the Nazi Occupation of France. Through staged re-enactments and archival footage and images, Sokurov’s film shines a light on their work at the Louvre preserving art and in the process, preserving civilization. Francofonia is subtly profound in its use of narration and in its attention to detail, while also exploring the past as a way of speaking about the future. The latest from Russian master Alexander Sokurov (Russian Ark), this Venice Film Festival prizewinner is a “dense, enriching meditation on the Louvre, Paris, and the role of art as an intrinsic part of the spirit of civilization,” according to Variety’s Jay Weissberg.
