Each May, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute hosts a Gala Benefit to coincide with the opening of its blockbuster spring exhibition. In 2015, that exhibition was China: Through the Looking Glass, the most ambitious show in the institute’s history. The First Monday in May takes viewers behind the scenes in preparation for both the groundbreaking exhibition—curated by master film director Wong Kar-wai—and the opulent Gala, an event chaired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour that has become the biggest annual celebration in the fashion world. Dominated by the abrasive Wintour, and featuring many of fashion’s biggest celebrities, from designers Karl Lagerfeld and Jean Paul Gaultier to style icon Rhianna, The First Monday in May explores the intersection of high fashion and celebrity. Rossi’s film, which opened this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, likewise wades into that endless debate as to whether fashion deserves to be considered art.
