Starring Jean-Louis Trintignant (Three Colors: Red, Amour) as a sexually repressed bureaucrat in Mussolini’s Italy, The Conformist is considered by many to be the late Bernardo Bertolucci’s (Last Tango in Paris, The Last Emperor) greatest artistic achievement. Structured around a series of flashbacks—The Conformist has long been compared to Citizen Kane—Bertolucci’s masterpiece explores Trintignant’s turn toward fascism, as he struggles with a youthful homosexual episode and a murder. The Conformist is awash in visual ideas and is conceived in an unending stream of indelible images, from white marble interiors to snowy landscapes, which linger longer after the film ends. Museum Films is proud to present the digital restoration of this classic psychosexual drama in honor of the film’s recently deceased director, Bernardo Bertolucci (1941-2018).
