Young, poor, and very much in love, married Parisians Antoine and Antoinette dream of a better life. Antoinette is forced to fend off constant propositions from department store patrons, as well as those of affluent middle-aged grocer, M. Roland. Everything changes when the couple wins the lottery—at least it seems to until a fateful trip on the Parisian Metro to collect their prize crushes the fantasy. All is not lost, however, in director Jacques Becker’s boundlessly charming ode to young love, the first of his so-called “Youth Trilogy.” Filming on location, Becker shoots the French capital in a series of long takes that capture numerous details of a city reborn after World War II. Awarded a prize for Best Psychological and Romantic Film at the 1947 Cannes Film Festival, Antoine and Antoinette is one of the true glories of postwar French cinema.
