Based on Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, with a screenplay co-written by In Cold Blood’s Truman Capote, The Innocents stars Deborah Kerr (From Here to Eternity) as Miss Giddens, the newly appointed governess for a pair of orphaned children. With their uncle (Michael Redgrave) completely disinterested in his wards, Giddens witnesses a series of unsettling events that leads her to believe that their house is haunted, and the children possessed. Or is it all in her head? Set during the late Victorian period and shot on location in a Gothic mansion in the south of England, The Innocents has earned a deserved reputation as one of the scariest films of all time—an opinion notably shared by Martin Scorsese.
