2016 Academy Award ® Nominee: Best Foreign Language Film – Denmark

In his latest action-drama A War, director Tobias Lindholm (A Hijacking) alternately immerses his viewers in a perilous Afghan battlefield and in the lives of those who suffer on the Danish home front. In each, Lindholm employs a Cinéma vérité style that captures, with great immediacy, both the “fog of war” and the emotional toll of overseas combat on military families. This Oscar-nominee strives for a much greater degree of realism than is typical for your average combat film, something that the film achieves through the casting of Danish and Taliban soldiers, relatives of military personnel, and refugees alike. A War is a much different sort of Best Foreign Language contender, less art-cinema than indie action pic.
