One of the most exciting films to come out of the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival, Have a Nice Day is a visually dazzling, darkly comic meditation on guilt, honor, and late capitalism, set in a small town in Southern China. When Xiao Zhang—a small-time delivery driver for a local crime boss—steals a bag containing one million yuan in hopes of salvaging his fiancée’s failed plastic surgery, word of the theft quickly spreads around town. Soon he is dodging an eerily efficient hit man and an assorted cast of enterprising characters who all have their eyes on the cash. Rendering seedy internet cafés, butcher shops, back offices, and housing blocks with a flawless eye for fine-grained textural detail, independent Chinese animator Liu Jian fuses brutal, Tarantino-esque neo-noir with astute social commentary and a slyly postmodern aesthetic sensibility.
