Position Summary:
The Studio Programs Teaching Artist will facilitate studio art-making experiences inspired by special exhibitions and the Museum’s permanent collection. Teaching Artists may work in one or more media, including but not limited to drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, installation, animation, photography, fiber arts, and new media.
The Museum seeks applicants who have experience teaching one or more of the following age groups: adults, early childhood (children ages five or younger), elementary-aged children, middle/high school.
Studio experiences generally involve trips to the galleries for looking, discussion, and inspiration. Potential studio program assignments include:
- Adult classes, one to six weeks in duration
- Youth classes, one to four weeks in duration
- Family workshops, one-time art-making experience for children + adults
- Art Camp, four day immersive experience for children ages 4 and up
- Drop-In Art, all ages open studio art-making on Saturday afternoons
- Tiny Tuesday, once monthly open studio art-making for kids 2-5 + adults
- Family Days, twice a year all-day open studio for visitors of all ages
- Special events that involve a studio component, booked on an individual basis
Teaching Artist is a part-time, on-call position that requires weekday and/or weekend availability. The number of hours per month varies based on program needs and availability. Previous art education experience is required, although training will be provided to Teaching Artists before they take responsibility for leading programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Facilitate studio experiences for adults, children, and/or intergenerational groups
- Create a positive, well managed studio/classroom environment for groups
- Prepare materials prior to programs and clean up afterward
- Record observations and program attendance after each program
- Engage in regular self-evaluation with Museum staff
- Participate in required training sessions, staff meetings, and program planning meetings
Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to maintain flexibility and composure while providing a high-quality studio experiences for a wide variety of people
- Knowledge of art-making media and techniques in one or more areas
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate teaching methods for at least one of the following age levels: early childhood, elementary, middle/high school, and adults.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to speak effectively with people at any level
- Proven ability to efficiently multi-task and maintain a positive attitude
- Able to prioritize and coordinate projects and workload
- Strong organizational ability and detail oriented
- Excellent listening skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and build strong relationships with all levels of staff
- Strong work ethic and self-motivation to complete tasks without direct supervision
- Excellent problem solving and judgment skills
- Interest in and/or knowledge of art history
Qualifications and Experience Requirements:
- Minimum Associates Degree or equivalent required; Bachelor’s Degree desirable
- Require previous experience working with one of more of the following groups in an art education setting: adults, early childhood (children ages five or younger), elementary-aged children, middle/high school.
- Museum experience is desirable but not required
Physical Requirements:
This is sedentary work that requires the following physical activities:
- Sitting or standing for long periods, walking, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity including close vision
- Occasional lifting (up to 10 pounds of office supply boxes or paper)
- May be required occasionally to stoop or kneel
