One of the best-reviewed films of the 1980s, Agnès Varda’s mid-career masterpiece concerns Mona Bergeron (Sandrine Bonnaire), a young drifter who is found frozen in a ditch in the film’s first scene. Unfolding thereafter through a series of flashbacks featuring those who encountered her, Vagabond pieces together Mona’s life story, producing a fragmented portrait of an enigmatic woman. Bonnaire, en route to a César trophy for Best Actress, stuns as the troubled young woman, someone with “a very specific story… [Which] does not seem to symbolize anything,” as Roger Ebert put it in his glowing, four-star review; while Varda’s spare, poetic imagery dominates a film that earned the director top prize at the 1985 Venice Film Festival.
