Described by many as a masterpiece, Jean-Pierre Melville, the legendary director of Army of Shadows, took it one step further, anointing Jacques Becker’s Le Trou “the greatest French film of all time.” Melville may not be that far off. Completed shortly before the Touchez Pas Au Grisbi director’s untimely death at age 53, Le Trou focuses on four inmates in La Santé Prison. With each facing hard time and dreaming of freedom, the cellmates plot their escape—an endeavor that will be further complicated by the arrival of a fifth prisoner, Claude Gaspard (Lola’s Marc Michel). Based on actual events, the details of the prison break are rendered in painstaking detail in this extraordinarily gripping thriller from the former Jean Renoir protégé. Museum Films is very proud to present Le Trou in a brand-new, digital 4K restoration.
