Voted the best film of the century in a 2016 BBC poll, David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr. did not begin life as a movie at all, but rather as an open-ended television pilot that was later rejected by ABC executives. Combining the story he shot for the TV pilot with new plotlines, the film that emerges is one of the great portraits of Los Angeles and the film industry—one that imagines the Hollywood dream factory in the most nightmarish of fashions. Chipper blonde actress Betty Elms (Naomi Watts) has just arrived in Hollywood with dreams of movie stardom. When Betty meets a mysterious brunette with amnesia (Laura Harring), the two women set off to solve the question of the latter’s identity. Meanwhile, filmmaker Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux) ominously runs into trouble while casting his latest project. The deeply disquieting and formally brilliant Mulholland Dr. is one of the great surreal landmarks of the twenty-first century screen.
