Conceived by the iconoclastic imaginations of Harvard-educated pals Douglas Kenney and Henry Beard, The National Lampoon rose from the ranks of counter-cultural rag to revered comic institution amid the social upheavals and political tumult of the 1970s. Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead follows the taboo-shattering (and from today’s far milder perspective, wildly offensive) Lampoon on its meteoric ascendance, stitching together talking-head interviews, archival footage, and the publication’s very R-rated art, in what is, ultimately, an exceedingly entertaining, crowd-pleasing portrait of the comic juggernaut. We also witness its steady decline, and that of its hard-partying co-founder, Kenney. Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead is not just the story of a magazine; it is also that of one of America’s greatest comedic generations, one that would include such Lampoon alumni as John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, P.J. O’Rourke, Gilda Radner, and Harold Ramis.
