One of the most purely pleasurable art films of the past year, Hermia & Helena follows theater director Camila (Agustina Muñoz) as she travels from Buenos Aires to New York to work on her new Spanish-language translation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Restless in her new setting, the young Argentine finds distraction in a series of mysterious postcards sent by Danièle (Mati Diop), a former participant in the same American residency. “A whimsical valentine to New York City,” in the words of the New York Times’s Stephen Holden, Argentine auteur Matías Piñeiro (The Princess of France) fills his latest riff on the writings of the English playwright with dead ends, new beginnings, and romantic detours that cross languages and hemispheres.
