Building on the stylistic shift toward absurdist comedy that began with his remarkable 2014 miniseries, Li’l Quinquin, acclaimed French auteur Bruno Dumont returns with a dark, madcap comedy of manners that is one part Luis Buñuel, one part Laurel and Hardy. Set near Dumont’s childhood home in the picturesque rolling dunes of northern France’s Channel Coast, Slack Bay follows two bumbling detectives who have come to investigate the mysterious disappearance of several tourists. As their inquiry progresses, they cross paths with the extravagantly wealthy and high-strung Van Peteghems and the watchful, vaguely sinister Bruforts, who eke out a living gathering mussels and ferrying vacationers across the bay. Featuring wonderfully expressive performances from a diverse cast of veteran European actors (including the great Juliette Binoche) and charismatic non-professionals, Slack Bay is a masterpiece of modern surrealism—triumphantly grotesque, sublimely romantic, and utterly unique.
