Set in his coastal hometown of Nantes, France, Left Bank auteur Jacques Demy’s remarkable first feature follows Roland Cassard (Marc Michel)—who will return in Demy’s international breakthrough, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg—as he remakes the acquaintance of his former flame, Cécile (the eternally glamorous Anouk Aimée, 8½), now a single mother and cabaret chanteuse called Lola. A visually ravishing, radiantly romantic homage to cinematic virtuoso Max Ophüls (Letter From an Unknown Woman, Lola Montès), Demy’s film presents a modernist, cinephilic gloss on Ophüls’ web of interlocking love triangles and his signature aura of cosmopolitan sensuality and delicate melancholy. Shot in smoky black and white by legendary cinematographer Raoul Coutard (Breathless), with a score by longtime Demy collaborator Michel Legrand, Lola is one of the French New Wave’s most exquisite hidden gems.
