In The Girl Can’t Help It—“a hilarious comedy with a beat” (Variety, 1955)—pop virtuoso Frank Tashlin trains his satirical eye on a budding musical phenomenon called rock and roll. The film follows washed up press agent Tom Miller (Tom Ewell) who is tasked with manufacturing a successful singing career for Jerri Jordan (Jayne Mansfield), the bombshell fiancée of overbearing slot-machine kingpin Marty ‘Fats’ Murdock. As Jordan’s career takes off, her budding relationship with Miller triggers an avalanche of romantic and professional complications. Adding to his arsenal of inventive sight gags and gloriously garish color combinations, Tashlin makes wonderful use of Mansfield’s gravity defying figure and her flawless comic timing. But The Girl Can’t Help It might be most memorable for its climactic concert sequence, featuring performances from Fats Domino, The Platters, Eddie Cochran, and Little Richard, whose anarchic energy fueled the diverse rock and roll dreams of John Waters and John Lennon.
