One of the landmarks of the New Taiwanese Cinema—the movement that assured East Asia’s place at the forefront of global art cinema in the mid-1980s—Taipei Story centers on the slow dissolution of a romantic relationship in the midst of the 1980s economic boom. In a rare on-screen performance, Taipei Story stars master-director Hou Hsiao-hsien (The Assassin) as a washed-up baseball player who is drifting apart from his upwardly mobile, property manager girlfriend (played by pop star Tsai Chin), as their dreams of marriage and emigration unravel. Set before the glowing nocturnal backdrop of the rapidly transforming Asian metropolis, Edward Yang’s (Yi Yi) melancholic masterpiece showcases a city and couple trapped between past and present. Museum Films is very proud to present this milestone of Modernist art cinema in a new restoration that actor and co-writer Hou personally supervised.
