In this fascinating exploration of the unheralded craft of obituary writing, documentarian Vanessa Gould takes us behind the scenes of The New York Times’ obit section. Once the unceremonious last stop for grey-haired journalists, Obit. reveals a department filled with seriously talented men and women who spit out profile after profile under unimaginably demanding deadlines. Where some of their colleagues will have days or even weeks to craft their columns, these good-humored journalists may only have a couple of hours between receiving the news of a celebrity’s death and the cutoff for the print edition. What emerges is an “engaging and lively” portrait of a profession that is less concerned with death, than with celebrating the lives, both big and small, which impact our world.
