Kelly Reichardt is one of the most acclaimed American filmmakers of her generation. Born and raised in the Miami-Dade County area, Reichardt’s first film, River of Grass (1994), was cited as one of the year’s best by a number of publications, including Village Voice and Film Comment. Her breakthrough came more than a decade later with Old Joy (2006), the first American film to be awarded the Tiger Prize at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Since then, she has received widespread acclaim for films such as Wendy and Lucy (2008), Meek’s Cutoff (2010), and her latest, Certain Women (2016). Throughout her rich, politically incisive body of work, Reichardt has consistently depicted America’s physical and social landscapes with great sensitivity.
About Wendy and Lucy:
Based on the short story “Train Choir” by John Raymond, Wendy and Lucy tells the deeply moving story of one woman’s struggles on the edges of the twenty-first century economy. Wendy Carroll (Academy Award®-nominee Michelle Williams) is driving to Ketchikan, Alaska in hopes of securing a lucrative position at the Northwestern Fish cannery. When her car breaks down in Oregon, the precariousness of her economic position leads to a series of tough choices—decisions that will have far-ranging repercussions for both Wendy and her dog Lucy. Directed by acclaimed auteur Kelly Reichardt (Certain Women), and originally released in 2008 in the midst of the global financial meltdown, Wendy and Lucy is a minimalist, modern classic of the road-movie genre that shows true empathy for those on the margins of American life.
