Tours, Museum Book Club, and more will inspire visitors to think like a costume designer
OKLAHOMA CITY (May 28, 2024) – The Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA) today announced the programming schedule that will accompany its summer exhibition Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer. The exhibition, which opens to the public Saturday, June 22, is organized by OKCMOA and presented by The Ann Lacy Foundation.
“We are excited to provide a wide array of programming for Edith Head that parallels the exhibition itself: both educational and entertaining,” said Bryon Chambers, head of education. “There will be opportunities for everyone to learn something new, get creative, and see Hollywood costume design in a new light.”
The programming schedule kicks off with members’ preview events and is followed by tours, Drop-In Art, the Museum Book Club, and more.

PUBLIC EXHIBITION TOURS
Join Museum staff for an in-depth tour, exploring major themes and highlights from the exhibition Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer. The exhibition features 70 costumes worn by stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Natalie Wood, and Kim Novak. This original exhibition groups Head’s costumes by style, including formal gowns, tropical wear, period pieces, and designs for Alfred Hitchcock films. Interspersed with 20 sketches, two screening areas, and three Oscar® statuettes, the exhibition offers a comprehensive showcase of Head’s life and work.

Explore Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer with Manager of Teacher and School Programs Tori Waldron, OKCMOA’s styled Hedda Hopper, as she dishes dirt on the productions and costume designs of Hollywood’s “Golden Years.” From the 1930s into the ’50s, gossip columnists cozied up with movie stars, directors, and studio executives, using the power of print media for influence, publicity, and scandalous whispers.

The fourth meeting of the Museum Book Club will feature a guided discussion of Design for Dying by Renee Patrick in the exhibition Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer on June 27th, 2024, from 5:30-7 p.m.
The Museum Book Club encourages OKCMOA visitors to engage with its special exhibitions by reading and discussing a selected book with Museum educator Tori Waldron. Each Book Club meeting begins with refreshments, including a themed snack and various alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and follows up with a discussion of literature and art.

Contour Fashion Collages
Join us in the studio for Drop-In Art to create your own Edith Head-inspired fashion form! Participants will shape their fashion figures using wax sticks on a flat surface, then collage decorative papers as fabric patterns, colors, and backgrounds.

Mixed-Media Costume Designs
Jump into the world of costume design! Visitors will explore the concepts of pattern, balance, color, and scale. Using a combination of materials, including pastels, fabric scraps, jewels, and more, visitors will create their own costume design inspired by Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer.
SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAM
The Oklahoma City Museum of Art partners with the Metropolitan and Pioneer Library Systems to offer children, teens, and adults the opportunity to create an Edith Head-inspired art activity. Activities will encourage participants to think like a fashion designer with a focus on the elements and principles of art in fashion.

Group exhibition tours and school field trips, including virtual field trips, will also be available during Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer, and a Teacher Professional Development Workshop will take place on Saturday, August 3.
