Seasons greetings,
Museum Films is very proud to present our 2022 holiday film series, Merry Little Christmas: Classic Holiday Films from the 1940s, screening each Saturday afternoon in December.
This curated five-film series features a special 75th anniversary presentation of The Bishop’s Wife starring Cary Grant; Vincente Minnelli and Judy Garland’s gorgeous technicolor musical Meet Me in St. Louis; a rare screening of the Preston Sturges-penned romance Remember the Night; and a Christmas Eve matinee of the beloved children’s classic Miracle on 34th Street. We’re also extremely excited to showcase Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life on 35mm film!
Marked by the upheaval of WWII, the 1940s saw the development and refinement of the holiday movie as a distinct subgenre, in which the yuletide season serves as a catalyst for personal reflection, atonement, reconnection or romance. Stirring, poignant and wryly funny, these films look back fondly on the togetherness and abundance of the pre-war golden days, and optimistically toward a post-war future where “all our troubles will be out of sight.”
Yours in Cinema,
Museum Films
