When a twenty-something white couple’s car breaks down on the way to a winter vacation at a friend’s Airbnb, a middle-aged African-American man offers help and a place to stay for the night. Soon Tyler, a cinematographer and aspiring director, and Anna, a budding novelist, are cozily ensconced in Clip’s kitchen for a night of drinking and conversation. Entranced by Clip’s creative wisdom and beautifully detailed childhood reveries, Anna is inspired to finish and submit her novel. When she discovers six months later that the words Clip spoke might not be his own, Anna and Tyler are horrified, fixating on his unprovable ‘crime’ while forced to confront their own claims to artistic originality and personal authenticity. A sharp and playful cultural satire about who has the privilege to say what in today’s world, The Plagiarists is a slippery micro-budget meditation on the clash of money and culture, words and images, reality and desire, race and identity.
