The acclaimed latest from producer-writer-director-actor Nanni Moretti (The Son’s Room, We Have a Pope), Mia Madre turns its attention to Margherita (Margherita Buy), a veteran director who is struggling with her latest, politically-minded production. Margherita must also deal with an ailing mother, for whom her brother, Giovanni (Moretti), has taken time off work to care. When the film’s unprofessional and underprepared Italian-American star (John Turturro) arrives, matters go from bad to worse for the filmmaker. Like much of Moretti’s best work, Mia Madre sensitively combines comedy and bathos in an ultimately very human and moving portrait of life’s many challenges. Moretti’s film, named 2015’s best by legendary French magazine Cahiers du cinéma, also provides a subtle, gendered modification of the director’s familiar template, placing a female character in the role of Moretti surrogate, while shifting the filmmaker to the role of care-giving supporting player.
