Jake (Theo Taplitz) is a sensitive middle-schooler with a passion for art. Tony (Michael Barbieri) is the self-assured son of an immigrant shop owner with his own dreams of becoming an actor. When Jake’s family moves into the residence above the shop, the two strike up an immediate and deep friendship. Co-written and directed by Ira Sachs (Love is Strange), Little Men is an exceptionally tender and sensitive exploration of adolescent kinship, which benefits greatly from the rapport of its two first-time actors. It is also a balanced and thoughtful look at the consequences of gentrification, set within a richly detailed and rapidly changing corner of Brooklyn. For New York Magazine’s Bilge Ebiri, Sachs is “gradually becoming the quintessential auteur of today’s New York.”
