Marcello Mastroianni plays Guido Anselmi, a director whose new project is collapsing around him, along with his personal life. Pursued by his emotionally needy mistress, his increasingly suspicious wife, and an army of fans, producers, and paparazzi, Guido retreats into a private world of childhood memories and erotic fantasies as he desperately attempts to rescue his troubled science-fiction epic from financial and artistic oblivion. Brilliantly blurring the boundaries between memory, imagination, reality and fiction, Federico Fellini offers a fascinating glimpse into the fevered mind of an artist and a wry portrait of a romantic life in chaos. An early working title for 8½ was The Beautiful Confusion, and Fellini’s masterpiece is exactly that: a shimmering dream, a circus, and a magic act. One of the greatest films about film ever made, 8½ deserves to be seen on the big screen.
