Children's Classes

AGES 3-5

Please no younger or older siblings; these are special classes for just you and your preschooler.  Children must meet the minimum age requirements for each class to participate.

Learn how light is used in art! Together, we will tour the special exhibition by New York-based artist Jason Peters titled Anti.Gravity.Material.Light. Back in the classroom, we will create a nighttime cityscape full of lights using chalk pastels.

In this class, children will experience blending and layering color, using pastels. We'll search the galleries for different shapes and colors and then return to the classroom to create our pastel drawings.

Let’s learn about collage and use our imaginations to create fun and wacky images! Working with magazine cutouts, children will experience the basic concepts of background, layout, layering, overlapping, mixing images, cutting, and gluing.

See what happens when light shines through art! In this class, children will learn how to make sun catchers by placing layers of tissue paper onto waxed paper with watered down glue. While they dry, we'll read a story and visit the galleries.  Finally, we'll add embellishments and assemble our sun catchers to take home.

Let’s celebrate the birthday of artist Leonardo da Vinci! Learn about this famous inventor and artist and one of his most famous paintings, Mona Lisa. We’ll share a story and snack and look at images of works created by Da Vinci and then print and paint our own creations in his style.

Spring has sprung and the birds are out! Learn about the beautiful and detailed works of John James Audubon, in this exciting new class. Together we will enjoy a snack, read a story, and search the galleries for birds. Then, we will return to the classroom and use ink and watercolors to create our very own Audubon-inspired works of art.

Learn about shapes and positive and negative space in this class. We will look at shapes in a new way as we choose items to lie on paper and spray them with liquid watercolors. When our objects are removed, a silhouette of our shapes will be left behind! Join us on this shape adventure while we search the galleries, enjoy a snack, and read a story, too!

Join us today to celebrate the birthday of famous artist Jasper Johns. We will talk about his works, read a story, and enjoy a fun snack. Let’s dress the woman in the most famous painting in the world, Mona Lisa. We will read a fun book, enjoy a snack, and tour the special exhibition, Sketch to Screen: The Art of Hollywood Costume Design. Using collage and photocopies, we will apply papers, fabrics, and embellishments to fashion our own Mona Lisa.
